The State Route 536 Skagit River and Division Street Bridge will close to all passenger and freight traffic on Sunday, Nov. 1.

Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) crews will work in both directions during the shutdown. The full closure is expected to last at least two weeks. This move aims to finish painting and preservation work on the historic bridge linking Mount Vernon and West Mount Vernon before the holiday season.

The project timeline changed earlier this year. An eastbound-only closure was originally set to continue into early 2027. The full closure shortens the total time needed to restore two-way access. WSDOT hopes to reopen the bridge in time for Thanksgiving. Weather conditions, including rain, wind, and cold temperatures, could delay this schedule.

Drivers must follow a signed detour using Interstate 5 and State Route 20. This route adds about 10 miles to the trip between the two sides of the river. WSDOT will announce the specific start time for the closure once it is set. The eastbound lane has been closed since June 11, 2026. That single-direction restriction remains in place until the full closure ends.

Emergency vehicles will retain access to the bridge in both directions. They will use temporary traffic signals located at either end of the span. These signals do not control passenger or freight vehicles, which must use the detour. Pedestrians, bicyclists, and people using mobility devices can continue to cross on foot or by bike. If construction requires closing the sidewalk, ADA-compliant shuttle vans will transport these users across the river.

The bridge was built in 1953. It has not been painted since 1990. Crews will use the closure to complete several tasks. They will paint the structure, repair the driving surface, and seal bridge joints. Workers will also install new lane markings and restore the bridge to its standard alignment with one lane in each direction. They will remove the containment system that protected the Skagit River during earlier construction phases.

Crews attempted to finish weather-sensitive work before the full closure began. Some remaining tasks may still face delays due to local conditions. WSDOT will post updates on its regional X and Bluesky accounts. Real-time travel information is available through the WSDOT mobile app, the WSDOT travel map, or email alerts.
